The RoHS Directive
This EU directive concerns restrictions on the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. It was issued at the same time as the WEEE Directive in February 2003. There are six prohibited substances: lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), hexavalent chromium (CrVI), polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE). Products with more than a specified amount of these substances have been regulated in the EU countries since July 1, 2006. Plans call for regulations based on the RoHS Directive to be gradually extended to North America and Asia in the future.
